Retainers & Whitening

Congratulations! Your braces are off. You are now in your final phase of treatment.

Types of Retainers

Essix Retainer
The Essix retainer is removable. It is made of clear plastic and is very easy to wear. This retainer can also be used as trays for whitening your teeth. The Essix retainer is the most commonly used after orthodontic treatment.

Bonded Lingual
The bonded lingual retainer is permanent. This is a very thin wire that is placed only on the lower six front teeth. This retainer is usually given to a patient with exceptional hygiene.

Retainer Instructions

When do I wear my retainers?
Wear your retainers full time (except when eating) for the first two weeks after removing the braces. After the first two weeks, wear them only at night. You are encouraged to wear them on a nightly basis for the rest of your life to maintain your new smile.

Taking care of your retainers:
Brush the retainers with water and toothpaste to keep them clean and fresh. You may soak them in retainer cleaner occasionally. Keep them in your retainer case when not wearing them. Avoid leaving them out where a pet can get them.

What if my retainers are lost or broken?
Phone the office for an appointment to replace the retainer. There will be a charge to replace lost or broken retainers.

Whitening
After your braces are removed, you may be interested in whitening your teeth. If you are interested in teeth whitening, you may call the office and we can get you started at a minimal cost.

Whitening Instructions
The key to successful whitening is consistency. Once you start whitening, continue it everyday for 2 weeks. The remaining syringes may be used for touch ups.

You may whiten up to 2 hours a day, but do not exceed 1 hour at a time.
  1. Floss and brush teeth before each whitening treatment. Twist off the clear plastic cap from the syringe and replace with the mixing nozzle.
  2. Place a small "teardrop" amount of gel in each tooth compartment on the tray. Molar compartments do not have to be filled.
  3. Place the tray with the gel in the mouth.
  4. Remove excess gel on the gum line with finger or dry toothbrush.
  5. After whitening, remove and rinse the trays with cold water. If necessary, use a toothbrush to remove any residual gel. Rinse and brush excess gel from teeth.
Helpful Hints
  • If the teeth become sensitive, stop whitening for a few days. If sensitivity continues, call the office and we will schedule an appointment to check the teeth.
  • If the gums become red and irritated, use a salt-water solution to rinse several times a day. (Use 1 teaspoon of salt in 1/3 glass of warm water.)
  • It is common for teeth to whiten in spots or with horizontal or vertical lines. Within a few treatments the spots or lines will blend together.
If you have any questions, problems, or more than mild tooth sensitivity develops, call our office.
